Sky Sports pundit critical of Tottenham star after England defeat v France
By Derek Smithson
Peter Taylor was critical of Tottenham ace Eric Dier after his recent England display and believes he failed to show enough quality in possession.
The 23-year-old completed 90 minutes for the Lions as they lost 3-2 away to France in an international friendly.
Spurs forward Harry Kane scored twice to continue his sensational form in 2017, but an exciting young French side proved too much for Gareth Southgate’s team.
Dier has emerged as an important player for his nation recently and England have a distinct lack of options in the central midfield area.
The versatile ace played in defence for Mauricio Pochettino’s side during much of last season, but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder if required.
Sky Sports pundit Taylor rated Dier a 6/10 for his Lions performance and feels there is a lot more he can still offer to the side.
“Just a six for Eric. He’s got to show a bit more on the ball; I didn’t see enough good football from him, lots of short passes but I wasn’t to see him change the play more in that position,” Taylor told Sky Sports.
Dier already has 19 senior international caps under his belt and is expected to be a mainstay in the team for the long-term.
The Spurs first teamer struggled to assert his dominance against a French midfield containing Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.
He is yet to full nail down one position for the north London club, but it’s likely he will continue to be used as a midfield enforcer for England.
