Sky Sports pundit delivers verdict on Tottenham ace Dier in England defeat
By Dominic Toner
Sky Sports pundit Paul Walsh gave Tottenham ace Eric Dier a 7/10 rating for his performance on Wednesday night.
The 23-year-old completed 90 minutes for England in the 1-0 defeat away to Germany in an international friendly.
England manager Gareth Southgate decided to use Dier in the midfield position as he tried out a 3-4-3 formation, which appeared to get the better of Germany for the majority of the game.
However, the Spurs man has been used in a back three for his club this season and proved what a versatile player he is.
Walsh gave Dier a decent rating for his England display and believe he was very effective in midfield.
“He made a few probing passes forward but kept things nice and tight in the middle of the park,” Walsh said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
Dier joined club team-mates Kyle Walker and Dele Alli in England’s starting line-up, but they were unable to prevent Lukas Podolski scoring a winning goal for the reigning World Cup winners.
They now turn their attention to a World cup qualifier against Lithuania at the weekend and the Spurs contingent are expected to play another major role.
Dier has been used as a centre-back this campaign by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, despite excelling as a defensive midfielder last season for club and country.
He has been forced out of the midfield by Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele for the north London club, but it appears he may still have an important role in that position for England.
In other Tottenham news, Eric Dier has revealed that his move to the club came after the worst period of his career.
