Danny Higginbotham feels that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino must love having the versatile Eric Dier in his squad.
The 23-year-old is regarded as an important player in Spurs’ set-up and proved that in the 2-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday.
He scored his first goal of the season to help bridge the gap to just seven points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea.
However, Sky Sports pundit Higginbotham believes that Dier’s versatility makes him a standout player.
The England international has proved over the last few seasons that he can fill in at either centre-back or as defensive midfielder, something he did both of against Burnley.
“Eric Dier showed his flexibility at the weekend by moving from central midfield to defence seamlessly,” Higginbotham wrote in the Sun. “It must be a joy for Mauricio Pochettino to have a player who can do both roles.”
Dier has become a popular figure at White Hart Lane since his arrival in 2014 from Portuguese outfit Sporting Lisbon.
The powerhouse starred as a defensive midfielder last season for Spurs, something that he has done frequently for England’s senior team.
He has been predominately used as a centre-back this campaign in a back three, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen playing alongside him.
Dier proved mid-way through the Burnley game what a useful player he is to have and his versatility has helped emerging youngster Harry Winks compete for a spot this season.
