Sky Sports studio erupt in disgust at Patrick Dorgu in Man United v Ipswich shocker

Man United full-back Patrick Dorgu left the Sky Sports studio in shock after the challenge that led to him being sent off in his side’s win over Ipswich Town.

The 20-year-old only made the move to Old Trafford in the January transfer window, signing from Serie A side Lecce.

He has quickly become a regular feature in Ruben Amorim‘s side, and Dorgu did impress for Man United in their draw with Everton at the weekend.

It was however a much less successful night for the Denmark international from an individual perspective against Ipswich at Old Trafford on Wednesday night (26 February).

Patrick Dorgu challenge on Omari Hutchinson stuns Sky Sports panel

Things did not start well for Man United in that match, as an error from Dorgu allowed Jaden Philogene to put Ipswich 1-0 up after just four minutes.

The hosts would then turn things around to lead 2-1 thanks to a Sam Morsy own goal and Matthijs de Ligt effort.

On the stroke of half-time though the 20-year-old once again put his side in a difficult position following his challenge on Ipswich attacker Omari Hutchinson.

After he was initially booked for the challenge, the Man United full-back was shown a red card after a VAR review showed his challenge to be a studs up on that caught Hutchinson high on the leg.

It was an incident that left those on reporting on the game on Sky Sports Soccer Special horrified over the nature of that tackle.

Speaking about the foul from Dorgu, former referee Mike Dean said (8:12pm): “I’ve just seen it now, it’s terrible, awful.”

As a replay was shown, pundits Tom Cairney, Tim Sherwood, Clinton Morrison, Michael Dawson all exploded with a collective: “Ohhhhhh”.

Dean then continued by saying: “He’s caught him right on his shin, full studs on, has to be a red card. Has to be a red card.”

Fulham captain Cairney added: “I think he could go, if he goes to the camera they’ll freeze frame it, I think it’ll look even worse.”

Host Julian Warren then declared: “Manchester United are gonna be down to 10, you heard the reaction from our team here when they saw that.”

As the panel waited for further replays during the VAR check Cairney said: “It looks naughty, I think he’s gonna go Jules. It’s gonna be an awful night for the boy, he’s [already] played Philogene in one v one.”

As new angles of the tackle were shown, Sherwood reacted with disgust “eurgh”, while Dawson exclaimed: “Woahhh! Red card! Off! No chance.”

Dean then once again reiterated his view on the incident by stating: “Awful! Awful challenge. That’s terrible.”

In response Morrison himself observed: “That’s a leg-breaker, that’s a leg-breaker, that’s off.”

Not surprisingly the panel then unanimously concluded that the foul from Dorgu was “100%” a red card.

Man United win little consolation for Patrick Dorgu

Moments after Dorgu had been dismissed Philogene would score his second of the night to equalise for Ipswich.

However, Harry Maguire struck shortly after half-time with a goal that would ultimately secure a 3-2 win for Man United.

That though is sadly unlikely to make Dorgu feel much better about things after what happened in that matct.

As a young player looking to adapt to a new league and new country, a moment such as this will surely be a huge blow to his confidence, given how hard he made life for his team in that game.

He will have to serve a ban, and even when he is available for Man United, he will have plenty of nerves over being backed by manager Amorim and his teammates who he won’t want to let down again.

Consequently he will feel the pressure when he is back on the pitch, so the rest of those at the club will have to help him through this tough period.
