Slaven Bilic gives honest update on West Ham transfer activity

By Danny Wright

Slaven Bilic has suggested that West Ham are not in the market to make any more “exciting” signings after already breaking their record transfer this summer.

Marko Arnautovic became the Hammers’ most expensive player of all time when he signed from Stoke while Javier Hernandez was also brought in from Bayer Leverkusen to address Bilic’s concerns up front.

Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta have also been introduced to the West Ham squad from Manchester City, and Bilic has now made it clear that the bulk of his buys are done and suggests that he will only add more faces unless he is hit with an injury crisis.

“You’ve got to be ready for all situations and be able to predict them if and when they happen, because it’s better if you’re ready,” the Croatian manager said in his honest update on the club’s transfer activity, as quoted by the London Evening Standard.

“I don’t expect any more ‘exciting’ signings because you don’t want to be overbooked in certain positions. You have to respect your players and those who are number two, because you don’t want them to be number three in their position.

“You only need them in case you have many, many injuries, but of course you can’t think like that. If something extraordinary happens, and it can happen because we’ve done really well without spending crazy money.

“I presume if something extraordinary happens in the market, then hopefully we’re still going to be able to do it, if necessary.”

West Ham notably underperformed in the Premier League last season as they slumped to a bottom half finish despite qualifying for Europe the year before.

Most of the Irons’ buys last summer came from abroad, however this year has seen the club take a different approach in trying to snap up players already in the Premier League, or have a good understand of the English top-flight.

Hernandez is arguably the Hammers’ best buy so far, having arrived at the London Stadium with two league titles under his belt from his previous spell with Manchester United.

In other West Ham news, the club have made a decision on the future of this crucial first-team player after reported interest from elsewhere in the Premier League.
