Son Heung-min contract: ‘Shock live on air at Tottenham news amid fitness fears’

Son Heung-min may not be fully fit despite seeing an extension in his deal with Tottenham triggered, Simon Jordan believes.

After moving to Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen back in the summer of 2015, the South Korea international had been due to see his current contract in north London expire at the end of this season.

However, the club confirmed on Tuesday (7 January) that they have taken up their option to extend that deal by a further 12 months, securing his future until the summer of 2026.

Now, Jordan has suggested that based on what he’s seen and heard, Tottenham may have done that in spite of the attacker not being fully fit after recent surgery.

Giving his reaction live on talkSPORT to news of Son’s contract being extended, the former Crystal Palace chairman said: “Well I wonder if he’s fit. I’ve understood through various channels – not Daniel [Levy] by the way – that he’s had surgery last year so I was looking at him in some of the games that I’ve been to watch Spurs this season and I’m thinking ‘he’s a mile off!’

“He doesn’t look like the same player that’s captured all the attention, at one point last season was the leader replacing Harry Kane, he looks like a bit part, and it might be because he’s not 100% fit.

“So I was questioning the idea of whether Son had run his course, and whether it was time for Tottenham to change up. Evidently not.”

Son Heung-min may still face fight for Tottenham future despite contract decision

Football Insider Opinion

Jordan is not the only one to have recently questioned whether Son would still be with Spurs come the end of this season.

Despite the fact he has now had a contract extension triggered by Tottenham that speculation may still remain.

His deal has only been extended by a year, meaning he will be able to agree a free transfer away from the club this time next year.

This move could therefore have potentially been made by the club to ensure they have the chance to cash in on him now, or in the summer transfer window.

Son Heung-min’s Tottenham future may still be up in the air

Tottenham have had plenty of injury problems this season, and so they can ill-afford to be relying on a previously talismanic player such as Son, if fitness issues prevent him reaching his previous levels.

With that in mind it would not be a huge surprise if the South Korea international does continue to find his future being speculated on in spite of this contratct update.
