Souness cited as Rangers set for transformation – ‘he’ll take no rubbish from these players’, says pundit

Michael Beale was like a “car salesman” during the summer transfer window but Rangers will go in the “right direction” under Philippe Clement.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie dug out the former Ibrox boss for convincing fans and the board that his signings would be “world beaters”.

The Englishman, who remains without a new club, brought in a swathe of players this summer that failed to justify their price tags in the eyes of much of the Rangers fanbase in the early stages of the season.

Since his dismissal in October, Clement remains unbeaten and has the Gers five points behind Celtic, but the likes of Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes are still to win over the Ibrox faithful.

McAvennie was baffled by the “strange” decision to give Beale unchecked influence over transfers but is confident that things will improve under the Belgian.

“If you’re a confident guy and a confident manager, like Clement, then you can say what you want,” he told Football Insider.

“But it’s all got to come right. Everyone bought into Beale, but he was like a car salesman!

“Rangers believed him and he made you believe that these players that he was bringing in were world beaters and that they’ll get sold for a lot of money.

“Abdallah Sima has done well, but he’s in on loan. Your Sam Lammers and your Cyriel Dessers have not done it for me yet.

“Beale was the one who brought them in because they didn’t have a football guy on the board which is a bit strange.

“But they’ve got Graeme Souness now, so they’ll go in the right direction now under Clement.

“If you believe what Clement is saying, and this fella has got confidence coming out of his ears, then he’ll take no rubbish from these players.”
