Arsenal are well placed to make Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes their second marquee signing of the summer after agreeing personal terms with him, Football Insider has learned.

The Gunners have leapfrogged previous favourites Napoli in the running for the Brazilian centre-back, 22, and are confident of sealing a deal in the next 48 hours.

An Arsenal source has told Football Insider the club have agreed a fee with Lille for Magalhaes and the player has also accepted their five-year contract offer.

Napoli have also had a bid accepted for the left-footed defender and it is now up to him which club to choose.

He is said to be on the verge of choosing Arsenal and could soon be ready to head to London to finalise the deal.

It would be a major coup for the Gunners, who last week completed their first marquee signing of the summer by beating multiple clubs to sign Willian on a free transfer.

Mikel Arteta has also identified a top-class centre-back as a priority in this summer’s window.

The Gunners have seven senior centre-backs on their books but Arteta is ready to listen to offers for Rob Holding, Sokratis and Calum Chambers.

Lille had been holding out for nearly £30million for Magalheas but the eventual fee is likely to be around the £22m mark.

Magalhaes has been targeted by Arsenal’s recruitment team after having the best of his three years at Lille before the French season was terminated in April.

He made 34 appearances last season as his side finished fourth in Ligue 1 and six in the Champions League as they ended bottom of a strong group that included Valencia, Chelsea and Ajax.

In other news, a senior Arsenal star “unlikely to play for the club again” as £30m bid is tabled.
