Sources: Aston Villa join race for Arsenal star Kieran Tierney in £30m-plus move

Aston Villa have joined Newcastle United in the race for Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old’s future is up in the air going into the summer and the north Londoners could sell him to raise funds for new signings.

Football Insider revealed last month (February 19) that Tierney is being monitored by Newcastle as they assess the market for a new left-back this summer who can slot straight into their starting XI.

Villa are also interested in Tierney despite signing a new left-back in January, when Alex Moreno arrived from Real Betis in a £12million deal.

Moreno has been sharing left-back duties with Lucas Digne since his arrival and already has three Premier League starts to his name, including in last weekend’s win over Crystal Palace.

Villa could be willing to sell Digne in the summer as Unai Emery continues his overhaul of the playing squad.

That would free up space for a new left-sided defender, with Tierney on the radar as he struggles for game time at league leaders Arsenal.

With the Gunners planning to spend big on a new midfielder in the summer, with Declan Rice a top target, there will need to be sales to balance the books.

One player who could raise a significant fee is Tierney, who has been squeezed out by the excellent form of 2022 signing Aleksandr Zinchenko.

Tierney, 25, has started only four Premier League matches among his 26 appearances in all competitions this season, many of them as a substitute.

The former Celtic star, who is valued around the £30million mark, is firmly on Newcastle’s radar, while the club also have an interest in Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, with Man City also keen on him.

Despite Newcastle’s interest in signing a left-back, they are also lining up new contract talks for current first-choice Dan Burn.

He is highly regarded by Eddie Howe and the coaching staff, with his versatility and experience valued highly at St James’ Park.
