Sources: Aston Villa to open Youri Tielemans talks as decision made

Aston Villa are planning to engage in talks with Youri Tielemans over a new contract, sources have told Football Insider.

The Belgian is out of contract with the second city outfit in 2028, but Unai Emery and Co. have every intention of extending his stay in the near future.

Tielemans has been a key player for Aston Villa since his return from injury in October, and sources now say that the Villa Park hierarchy are keen to tie him down quickly amid their ongoing PSR issues.

The Villans are set to find it difficult to strengthen their squad again in the upcoming transfer windows, and as a result, there is a clear desire to ensure that they keep hold of all of their important players in January.

Youri Tielemans has huge popularity at Aston Villa

Aston Villa fans hailed Tielemans’ display after he hit the winner in their recent Europa League win away at Basel, and it was yet another example of the high regard in which he is held at Villa Park.

The 28-year-old joined the Villans on a free transfer back in 2023, after his Leicester City side were relegated from the Premier League, and since then, he has gone from strength to strength as a player.

The former Monaco star missed just two Premier League games across the entire 2024-25 campaign, and ended the season as one of his team’s most productive players with 15 goal involvements across all competitions.

Tielemans is a hugely popular figure among the fanbase, who adore him for his classy midfield displays.

He is also a firm favourite of Emery, who has quickly restored him to the number 10 role after his lay-off earlier in the season.

Emiliano Buendia also set for Aston Villa negotiations

Emiliano Buendia is also set for discussions with Aston Villa regarding the possibility of a new contract in the coming months, after he has been revitalised since returning from his loan spell in Germany.

The Argentine joined Bayer Leverkusen for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign, and many thought that he had no future at Aston Villa when he returned.

However, the attacking midfielder has reminded everybody in the Premier League of what he can do of late, as only Morgan Rogers can better Buendia’s tally of six league goal contributions so far in 2025-26.

The ex-Norwich man’s current deal has just one year left to run when we reach the summer, so there is a real sense of urgency for the club hierarchy to tie him down.

Buendia has been a big part of Villa’s resurgence from their disappointing start this term, and he could soon be about to receive his reward for that.
