Marcelo Bielsa is confident Kalvin Phillips’ value will continue to sar at Leeds United this season and he’ll be worth more than £30million next year, Football Insider understands.
The midfielder is on the verge of committing to a new and improved United contract after reaching agreement with the club this week.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Bielsa is convinced he can help the 23-year-old further progress this season after transforming him into one of the outstanding players in the Championship since his arrival last year.
Bielsa converted Phillips into a midfield anchorman and he has developed into arguably the best player in his position outside of the top flight.
The Elland Road academy product was the subject of strong interest from Premier League clubs during the summer window, with Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Norwich City and Wolves among those interested.
Leeds managing director Angus Kinnear claimed the club rejected offers of up to £20million for their prize asset and has subsequently said an extension is “very close” to being agreed.
As revealed by Football Insider, the contract is with the lawyers of both parties before it will be signed off ahead of an official announcement.
Bielsa is confident Phillips can be even more effective for the promotion chasers this season and that is value will rocket beyond the £30million point.
The midfielder has played the full 90 minutes of all eight of Leeds’ league and cup matches this season.
