Sources: Major update on Edwards future at Liverpool and his next job plans

Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards is planning to leave the club at the end of the season and does not have a new job lined up, Football Insider understands.

Speculation emerged during the late summer that Edwards’ Anfield future was in major doubt with his contract set to expire next summer.

A Liverpool source has told Football Insider that there is yet to be an agreement over a new deal and that the sporting director is set to move on.

That has led to suggestions in some quarters that Edwards, who has been at Liverpool for 10 years, has a high-profile new job lined up.

But the architect of the Merseysiders’ outstanding transfer business of the Jurgen Klopp era is instead seeking a new challenge.

Losing Edwards would mark the end of a hugely successful period at Liverpool in which the club have won the Premier League and Champions League titles.

The man in charge of the recruitment team has made a vital contribution to the return of the club to the pinnacle of European and English football.

Edwards joined Liverpool from Tottenham to take up the role of head of analytics in 2011.

He has been promoted on a number of occasions during that time before taking up his current role in November 2016.

That has marked a period in which Liverpool have built an outstanding squad through mostly inexpensive fees, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Diogo Jota proving outstanding value for money.

When Liverpool have spent big – most notably the £75m and £67m fees for Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker – that has been vindicated as well.

Under Edwards’s leadership, Liverpool have also proved adept at securing huge profits when selling players, most notably with the £142m fee for Philippe Coutinho.
