Sources: Birmingham City plot move to sign Derby County star Jason Knight

Birmingham City are plotting a move to sign Derby County midfielder Jason Knight, sources have told Football Insider.

Derby are facing a battle to keep hold of the 21-year-old in this window following their relegation from the Championship last season.

Birmingham boss Jon Eustace is understood to be a big fan of Knight and is keen to bring him to his squad at St Andrew’s.

Knight played the full 90 minutes as Derby got their 2022-23 League One campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 win over Oxford United.

He was a key player under Wayne Rooney during the 2021-22 season, making 39 appearances in all competitions.

During that campaign, Knight was regularly used on both the left and right-wing but also spent time as a central midfielder and right-back on occasion.

Knight joined Derby in 2017 as a 16-year-old and made his first-team debut on 5 August 2019 in a 2–1 win away at Huddersfield.

He also captains the side on occasion, with the first time coming during Wayne Rooney’s first game as manager in January 2021.

Knight was one of just five senior players contracted to the club at the start of July following the intensifying of financial issues at Pride Park.

However, after months of uncertainty, Derby was saved by local businessman David Clowes on 1 July.

Birmingham drew 0-0 with Luton Town on the first day of the new Championship season (30 July).

The club are currently going through their own takeover saga as a consortium led by Paul Richardson and Maxi Lopez attempt to agree a deal with current owners BSHL.

In other news, sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are confident of signing Jude Bellingham after new talks.
