Sources: Birmingham City to recall Cosgrove after Shrewsbury Town bust-up
Birmingham City striker Sam Cosgrove is set to have his loan spell at Shrewsbury cut short after a bust-up with boss Steve Cotterill, Football Insider understands.
Cosgrove joined the League One outfit on a season-long loan last summer, but has struggled to make an impact.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Shrewsbury are now ready to accelerate Cosgrove’s departure from the club following a disagreement with manager Cotterill.
The striker could return to Birmingham and possibly be loaned out elsewhere before Monday’s transfer deadline.
He remains under contract at St. Andrew’s until the summer of 2024 after penning a three-and-a-half-year deal last January (2021) when he signed from Aberdeen.
Cosgrove scored twice in his first six League One appearances for Shrewsbury but has not found the net since.
The 25-year-old has not started for Cotterill’s side since the middle of October and has not even made the matchday squad for their last two games.
Shrewsbury brought in striker Saikou Janneh on loan from Bristol City at the beginning of January.
They sit in 17th-place in League One, just four points above the relegation zone and all of the sides below them have at least one game in hand.
Birmingham have lost striker Chuks Aneke this month as he returned to Charlton Athletic after a six-month spell in the Midlands.
Lee Bowyer’s side have only won one of their last nine games across all competitions and sit in 18th-place.
They are next in action on Sunday (30 January) when they travel to Wayne Rooney’s Derby County.
