Sources: Blackburn Rovers set sights on director of football as manager hunt continues

Blackburn Rovers are planning to appoint a new director of football as well as a new manager this summer, Football Insider understands.

The Championship outfit want to put a new management structure in place ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Rovers are speaking to several candidates for the director of football role and hope to attract a highly-regarded operator and talent spotter to work alongside a new manager.

Rovers are searching for a new boss following the departure of Tony Mowbray at the end of the season.

The 58-year-old’s contract expires at the end of June and the club decided against a renewal.

It brings an end to Mowbray’s five-year spell at Ewood Park.

As revealed by Football Insider (12 May), Carlos Carvalhal has emerged as one of the front-runners for the vacancy at Blackburn.

The 56-year-old is being targeted by clubs in England and abroad following his impressive spell in the Primeira Liga with Braga.

Carvalhal‘s services can be secured without compensation this summer given his contract situation in Portugal.

Ex-Derby County boss Phillip Cocu has also been considered for the manager’s job at Ewood Park.

Blackburn Rovers occupied a play-off spot for much of this season but fell out of contention in the latter stages of the campaign.

Mowbray’s side eventually finished eighth in the table.
