Sources: Brentford agree to allow Matthew Cox to complete loan move
Brentford have agreed to allow their goalkeeper Matthew Cox to go out on loan during this summer’s transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Cox, 20, who spent a large part of last season as understudy to number one David Raya, is being allowed to leave in order to gain some valuable first-team experience.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank rates Cox highly and sees him as the future first-choice keeper at Brentford.
A number of Football League clubs have made loan enquiries for Cox and Brentford are now deciding where is best for the keeper to continue his development.
The goalkeeper, 20, was a stand-out performer for England at the last year’s European Under-19 Championship in Slovakia and was named in the team of the tournament.
Cox started four of five games – including the final – as England’s Under-19 side won the competition.
The former Chelsea youngster became the second choice at the Brentford Community Stadium at the start of last season after Alvaro Fernandez returned to parent club Huesca following a season-long loan in England.
However, Cox is yet to play a single minute of senior football in his professional career.
He was on the bench for 21 of Brentford’s 38 Premier League fixtures last season.
Football Insider revealed in 2021 that the goalkeeper had been selected to make his debut against Man United before the game was postponed due to a Covid outbreak.
The youngster’s contract at the London outfit is set to run until June 2028.
He penned a bumper new six-year agreement just last summer (2022).

Brentford have already agreed to add Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken to their side this summer (2022).
Current first-choice David Raya, who has just 12 months remaining on his contract, is widely expected to leave the club.
