Sources: Cardiff City open talks to sign Charlton Athletic star
Cardiff City have opened talks to sign Charlton Athletic midfielder Jonny Williams, Football Insider understands.
The 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is likely to be available for a cut-price fee this month.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the Bluebirds are looking to strike a deal before tomorrow’s deadline.
New Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy is a big admirer of the midfielder having signed him on loan twice during his time at Ipswich Town between 2012 and 2018.
A graduate of Crystal Palace’s academy, Williams went on to make 70 appearances for the Eagles in an eight-year spell at the club.
In that time he enjoyed loan spells at Ipswich, Nottingham Forest, MK Dons and Sunderland before he completed a permanent move to Charlton in January 2019.
Williams has featured 66 times for Lee Bowyer’s side across three seasons and scored twice.
He helped the Addicks gain promotion from League One in his first season at The Valley before subsequently seeing them relegated again in 2019-20.
The 21-times Wales international has spent the majority of his career in the Championship – he has made 132 appearances in the division.
McCarthy replaced Neil Harris at the Cardiff City Stadium on 22 January and if this late-window swoop comes off, it would be his first signing with the Welsh club.
Williams could bring some much needed experience to a Bluebirds side struggling at the wrong end of the Championship.
The Welsh side are 15th in the table and without a win in eight games across all competitions.
In other news, Preston North End have completed a deal to sign a left-back from Cardiff.
