Sources: Celtic tell Vasilis Barkas to find new club

Celtic are willing to let Vasilis Barkas go this summer, Football Insider understands.

The 27-year-old has slipped to third in the goalkeeper pecking order this season and made just two appearances.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club have told Barkas he is free to find a new club ahead of the summer.

The Greece international was available for loan in the January transfer window.

But potential moves to Sheffield United and Gothenburg fell through due to the cost of paying his wages.

The first of Barkas‘ two outings this term came in the first leg of a Champions League qualifying game against FC Midtjylland on 20 July.

The game finished 1-1 with the Danish side equalising thanks to a mistake from Barkas.

The stopper was caught in two minds and seemed to move out of the way of the ball as Midtjylland scored directly from a free-kick.

His second outing came on Boxing Day as his side beat St Johnstone 3-1 in the Premiership.

Joe Hart, 34, has been in brilliant form since he joined Celtic in the summer of 2021.

On the three occasions Hart has missed a league game, Scott Bain, 30, was called in to start ahead of Barkas.

Bain also has a Europa League appearance to his name this season with Barkas firmly established as third-choice.

Barkas only has 24 total Celtic appearances to his name after being signed from AEK Athens in the summer of 2020.

He started nine of his first 10 league games as a Bhoy but was quickly displaced by Bain.
