Sources: Charlton Athletic agree to sign Wigan Athletic star Gwion Edwards

Charlton Athletic have agreed a deal to sign Wigan winger Gwion Edwards before the close of the transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

Charlton have reached a full agreement for the former Swansea and Ipswich man and are now applying the final touches to the deal.

Addicks boss Dean Holden was keen to add to his side’s attacking options this month and pushed for Edwards to join before the transfer deadline.

Edwards, 29, has found himself out of favour at Wigan this season, making just two brief substitute appearances for the Championship strugglers.

Edwards has managed just 24 minutes in the Championship this season, with his last appearance coming in a brief cameo against Sunderland in December.

It’s a stark contrast from last season’s League One campaign when Edwards made 30 appearances for Wigan in his debut campaign with the club, albeit mostly as a substitute.

After helping Wigan to win the League One title in his first season, opportunities have since been hard to come by even with the Latics sitting bottom of the Championship.

Prior to his time with Wigan, Edwards spent three seasons as a regular starter at Ipswich Town, making 96 league appearances and scoring 14 times before departing the club in June 2021.

Two-year stints at Crawley Town and Peterborough United came before that, with Edwards a major part of both sides.

He scored 12 times in 79 league appearances for Crawley before completing his switch to Peterborough in 2016 and scoring 11 times in 59 appearances.
