Sources: Charlton Athletic in advanced talks to appoint ex-Southampton boss Nathan Jones

Charlton Athletic are in advanced talks to appoint former Southampton boss Nathan Jones as manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The Addicks have been searching for a new manager to replace Michael Appleton since his sacking in January.

The 48-year-old took charge of the club in September and was sacked within an hour of the club’s 3-2 defeat to Northampton Town last month.

Charlton made Jones a top target to succeed Appleton and they are now in advanced talks to appoint the former Saints and Luton Town boss.

Jones was sacked by Southampton in February 2023 after his three months in charge of the side left the club bottom of the Premier League table.

He signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at St Mary’s Stadium but took charge of just 14 games before facing the sack.

Jones has been out of a job since his Southampton sacking.

Prior to his spell at Southampton, Jones enjoyed a successful second stint at Luton where he led the club to the Championship play-offs in 2022.

Jones first took charge of Luton between 2016 and 2019 before returning in 2020 for a further two years – he left the Hatters with a win rate of 41 percent having won 54 of his 133 games in charge.

Jones is now in talks to join a Charlton side who sit 18th in League One with no wins in their last five.
