Sources: Charlton Athletic lead race to sign Blackburn Rovers star Tayo Edun

Charlton are leading the race to sign Blackburn Rovers defender Tayo Edun on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

Edun, 24, is a target for a number of clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Lincoln and MK Dons, but Charlton are looking to steal a march on their rivals for the versatile performer’s signature.

Edun, who can play in defence or midfield, has found his first-team opportunities limited under Jon Dahl Tomasson this season, making just eight appearances in the Championship.

Charlton boss Dean Holden is keen to improve his squad during this month’s transfer window and sees Edun as a key addition to his plans at the Valley.

Edun spent his youth career at Fulham and eventually broke through to the first team where he made two senior appearances for the Cottagers.

The defender also boasts an impressive youth record with England, having played in the Under-17s all the way up to the Under-20s in 2018.

He found his feet at Lincoln City in the 2020/21 season, where he scored against Liverpool in the third round of the EFL Cup.

It clearly caught the eye of Blackburn, who then moved swiftly to sign Edun in 2021.

However, Harry Pickering has often been Dahl Tomasson’s first-choice left-back at Blackburn this season, with Edun usually limited to a role coming off the bench.

With game time at a minimum, a move down to League One looks likely.
