Sources: Chelsea encouraged in Lucas Bergvall bid after ‘big’ Tottenham news
Chelsea have received encouragement in their efforts to sign Tottenham star Lucas Bergvall despite seeing an enquiry rebuffed in the mid-season window.
Both Chelsea and Aston Villa are believed to have contacted Sours about the 20-year-old in January, but were told he was not for sale at any price.
However, as I explained on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs may be unable to keep hold of him if their poor form continues.
Tottenham have been sucked into a relegation battle, with just five points separating them from West Ham, and are now fighting for survival.
As it looks extremely unlikely that they will qualify for Europe, clubs aiming for Champions League qualification are keeping a close eye on their top players.
Chelsea given encouragement in Lucas Bergvall chase
Bergvall has been a key player for Spurs this season, having made 26 appearances across all competitions so far, but is attracting growing interest as a result.
The likes of Chelsea believe they will be able to tempt the Sweden international away from North London by offering him the opportunity to continue playing European football.
Should Tottenham fail to turn around their fortunes under Igor Tudor, there is a growing feeling they will find it difficult to retain their best players.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Well look, if Tottenham are out of Europe and struggling again, they’re going to find themselves more more susceptible to offers for their best players and Bergvall definitely comes in to that reckoning.
“He’s a highly-regarded player and he’s done well since he arrived at Tottenham.
“Obviously, he’s out with a long-term injury, so he’s been a big miss for Tottenham in the fight they find themselves in for survival as well.
“He’s highly regarded at Tottenham, he’s under a long contract until 2031 and there was no surprise that they rebuffed those inquiries from Chelsea and Villa in the January window.

“There was no change they were going to let him leave then. Tottenham see him as a key part of their long-term future at the club.
“But if Spurs continue to struggle and maybe miss out on European competition, you might have other clubs ready to test their resolve to keep hold of their best players including Bergvall.”
Cristian Romero could follow Bergvall out of Tottenham
Bergvall is not the only player who could be making a move away from Spurs this summer, with a number of high-profile stars considering their futures.
Former scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Romero could leave Tottenham this summer as he is no longer happy at the club.
The 27-year-old has made headline recently with public outbursts against the club, before his red card against Man United added to Spurs‘ concerns about his position.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 11 February that Romero could push to leave Tottenham, although he remains on a long-term contract there.
Both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been long-term admirers of the centre-back and could tempt him to move on when the summer arrives.
