Sources: Chelsea to confirm Mauricio Pochettino appointment after talks breakthrough

Chelsea will confirm their new manager by the end of this week with Mauricio Pochettino expected to land the role, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed talks between the club and the former Tottenham boss, 51, entered the final stages last week – with the Argentine keen to take the reins at Stamford Bridge.

Football Insider revealed on 25 April that Pochettino has verbally agreed to be the new Chelsea manager.

However, final negotiations are ongoing over his backroom staff and other small, but important, details.

Chelsea have spoken with several candidates during a long process, with the club’s board keen to hire the correct man after a dreadful 2022-23 season.

Former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann was a key target but pulled out of the race after a breakdown in talks, while Luis Enrique was also interviewed along with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.

Pochettino became the front-runner later in the process and has since told Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and his staff he would be keen to take on the job.

Frank Lampard is currently in interim charge and will remain in the post until the end of the season with the new boss set to take over for the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

Chelsea have suffered a horrific season – with four different managers taking charge of the club.

With tension in the Chelsea fanbase, it is believed that the board are aware they cannot afford any more mistakes as they move into the next chapter of their ownership.

Pochettino most recently managed Paris Saint-Germain, and was previously in charge of London rivals Tottenham -where he managed 293 games.

He took Spurs to the Champions League final in the 2018-19 campaign – where they were beaten by Liverpool.
