Sources: Chelsea to open Levi Colwill talks as Liverpool pounce

Chelsea will open contract talks with defender Levi Colwill as they look to tie down a player they value highly, sources have told Football Insider.

The centre-back, who is currently on loan at Brighton, has been monitored by multiple Premier League clubs this season, with interest understood to be high in him.

However Chelsea see the 20-year-old as a key part of their project moving forward and do not wan to lose him in summer, especially to a direct rival.

The England Under-21 international is wanted by Liverpool among others and, as revealed by Football Insider on Friday, they will explore the conditions of a potential deal.

Pep Guardiola is a fan of the rising star and Man City are looking to add more homegrown talent to their squad for next season.

Liverpool have also sent scouts to watch Colwill and are aware of the need to bolster their ranks of homegrown players in their 25-man Premier League squad for next season.

Colwill wants to be playing regularly next season and this has led clubs to add him to their shortlist of targets, as there is uncertainty he can be assured that at Chelsea.

If Brighton hope to keep the left footer at the Amex Stadium they will have to pay a fee well in excess of £25million as his parent club will not sanction another loan next season.

The Blues may have to convince Colwill he will feature regularly if he is to commit his future to the club as he is ready to move forward and also has aspirations to play for England.

In other news, Pundit cant believe Mourinho could be next Chelsea manager.
