Sources: Chesterfield boss Paul Cook in contention for Plymouth Argyle job

Chesterfield boss Paul Cook is in the frame for the vacant managerโ€™s job at Plymouth Argyle, sources have told Football Insider.

The Devon club are searching for a new manager following Steven Schumacherโ€™s departure to Championship rivals Stoke City earlier this week.

Cook is one of several names under consideration for the vacancy at Home Park after impressing again at Chesterfield this season.

He has guided the Spireites to the top of the National League table after winning 18 of their 22 fifth-tier games this season.

The 56-year-old boasts a wealth of experience having won promotion with three different clubs in Chesterfield, Portsmouth and Wigan.

Cook has also taken charge at Ipswich and Accrington Stanley and has managed 815 career games since retiring from playing in 2006.

The Kirkby-born boss returned for a second spell at Chesterfield in February 2022 and finished runner-up in the National League play-offs last season.

He has taken charge of 92 Championship matches during his career, picking up an average of 1.21 points per game with Wigan in the second tier.

Plymouth sit 16th in the table following Schumacherโ€™s departure for Stoke.

The Devon side are yet to win away from home in the league this season following promotion from League One as champions in the 2022-23 campaign.

Argyle are next in action against Birmingham City on Saturday (23 December), before travelling to Cardiff City on Boxing Day (26 December).
