Sources: Eric Dier ready to quit Tottenham after major development

There is a real possibility of Eric Dier quitting Tottenham this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old was left out of the squad which drew 2-2 away at Brentford in the opening game of the 2023-24 season on Sunday (13 August).

Speaking post-match and quoted by the BBC, new boss Ange Postecoglou claimed Dier remains “part of this team” and “available for selection” despite his omission.

It is believed the player himself remains happy at Tottenham – the club for whom he signed nine years ago from Sporting CP.

However, a well-placed source has told Football Insider he could be open to a move away from north London as he has less than 12 months remaining on his contract.

Clubs have been alerted to a possible cut-price deal for Dier due to his contract situation.

The versatile 29-year-old wasn’t the only player left out of the matchday squad on Sunday – with Hugo Lloris, Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga, Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon also omitted.

Dier made 42 appearances across all competitions last season and was a favourite of former boss Antonio Conte.

He exclusively played as a centre-back despite previously taking up central midfield and right-back roles in a Spurs shirt.

The England international, who earns a reported £85,000-a-week, penned his last contract extension in 2020.

Dier has turned out 361 times across all competitions for Spurs but is yet to win a trophy with the Lilywhites.

Micky van de Ven has arrived from Wolfsburg to give him further competition at centre-back, while controversial defender Davinson Sanchez was picked ahead of him by Postecoglou for the draw at Brentford.

Former Everton youngster Dier can discuss a pre-contract move with foreign sides in January.
