Sources: Ex-Chelsea number two Jody Morris opens West Brom manager talks

Jody Morris is in talks with West Brom to become their new manager, sources have told Football Insider.

The ex-Chelsea and Derby County assistant boss, 43, has been out of work since January 2021 after leaving Stamford Bridge following Frank Lampard’s dismissal

Morris is now in the frame to replace Steve Bruce at West Brom after making the club’s final shortlist for the managerial vacancy.

The Baggies are hoping to make an appointment ahead of the weekend – when they will face play-off contenders Millwall at The Den.

Bruce’s dismissal hasn’t helped to immediately change West Brom’s fortunes, with caretaker boss Richard Beale registering one win and one loss.

Football Insider revealed on 11 October that Wigan Athletic boss Leam Richardson is in the frame for the vacancy – while Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher has also been linked.

Former Chelsea midfielder Morris hasn’t held a managerial position at the senior level so far in his career – but led the Blues’ Under-18 side to a treble and a quadruple in two seasons in a head coach role.

He took the step into senior football as assistant manager with his former teammate Lampard and missed out on promotion from the Championship with Derby after losing in the play-off final.

Speaking after he was linked to the Cardiff City job and quoted by Wales Online (21 September), Morris insisted he is “actively trying” to return to management but would have to be “100% convinced” with the opportunity.

West Brom

West Brom sit 22nd in the Championship this term after losing five of their 15 games so far.

They face Milwall on Saturday (22 October) before hosting Sheffield United a week later.

In other news, Kieran Maguire claims West Brom can cash in from “bidding war” as £150m deal agreed.
