Sources: Huddersfield open talks to sign ex-Chelsea star Blackman

Huddersfield Town are in talks to sign former Chelsea goalkeeper Jamal Blackman, Football Insider understands.

The 28-year-old is a free agent after leaving MLS side LAFC earlier this month after a short spell in America.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Blackman has been training with Championship promotion hopefuls Huddersfield and is close to agreeing a deal.

Lee Nicholls is the club’s current number one after displacing Ryan Schofield at the beginning of the season.

He has kept 10 clean sheets in 26 Championship appearances for Huddersfield Town side this term.

Blackman failed to hold down a regular place at LAFC and shared the gloves with Tomas Romero and Pablo Sisniega.

He managed just one clean sheet in eight MLS games for the California club.

Chelsea only let Blackman go at the end of the 2020-21 campaign when his contract expired after 15 years at Stamford Bridge.

The former England youth international never made a senior appearance for his boyhood club and spent time on loan at eight different clubs.

He will offer Huddersfield vast Championship experience with 57 games at the level under his belt.

In spells at Sheffield United and Rotherham United, he kept 15 clean sheets in the second-tier.

Blackman has also been on loan to Middlesbrough and Leeds United but did not make a senior appearance for either club.

Huddersfield, who currently occupy the final play-off place, are next in action against Stoke City on Friday (28 January).
