Sources: ‘Huge’ update on Varane’s future at Man United – Saudi move latest

There is not likely to be big interest in Man United star Raphael Varane in January despite new revelations about his contract situation, sources have told Football Insider.

The Athletic revealed on Wednesday (13 December) that Varane is out of contract at the end of the 2023-24 campaign – rather than in June 2025.

As such, the France international can talk to foreign sides about a pre-contract agreement next month.

The January transfer window could be Man United’s last chance to cash in on Varane – but a well-placed source has told Football Insider that there is not likely to be many “landing spots” available to him in the new year.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (14 December) that United will listen to offers for Varane and five other mega-earning stars next month as they look to raise funds to reinvest in their flagging squad.

However, it is believed a potential switch to the Saudi Pro League could be the only avenue available to the World Cup winner with sources claiming his “huge wages” could be a stumbling block to a European move.

Varane’s contract at Old Trafford nets him a reported wage of £340,000-a-week.

Sources say the player is happy to stay at Man United and continue fighting for his place until his contract expires.

The centre-back could be needed by Erik ten Hag in the coming weeks following an injury to Harry Maguire against Bayern Munich.

Varane has made 13 appearances across all competitions this term – with just eight of those outings coming as part of the starting eleven.

Man United

He has turned out just 76 times for United since signing from Real Madrid in 2021, with injuries plaguing his time in England so far.

Man United, who also have Lisandro Martinez on the treatment table, sit sixth in the Premier League and have been dumped out of the Champions League.
