Sources: Ipswich Town open preliminary talks with Fulham over Jay Stansfield deal

Ipswich Town have opened preliminary talks with Fulham to sign on-loan star Jay Stansfield in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The striker has made a huge impact at Birmingham City this season since his loan move from the Cottagers last summer.

The Tractor Boys are hoping to agree a deal with Marco Silva’s outfit that would see him prised from Wayne Rooney’s struggling side for the second half of the campaign.

Fulham have the option to recall Stansfield from his loan at St Andrew’s at the midway point and can then send him to a new club.

While the west Londoners are yet to come to a decision, they are open to the 21-year-old moving in winter.

Other Championship clubs have registered interest in Stansfield but Ipswich are hoping to steal a march on them through their talks with the Premier League side.

Fulham have no plans to bring the striker back into their squad in the new year.

Stansfield has been a rare standout for the 19th-place Blues this season after notching seven goals and two assists in the Championship.

He is a versatile attacker and has played all along the front line as well as in attacking midfield this season across 22 appearances in all competitions.

Man United

Ipswich have had remarkable success under manager Kieran McKenna, who has them vying for promotion to the Premier League after they left League One last season.

They currently sit second in the Championship after clinching a late point against league-leaders Leicester City and next face QPR on Friday evening (29 December).
