Sources: Ipswich Town prepare lucrative offer for Sunderland star Wyke

Ipswich Town are preparing a lucrative offer to sign Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke, Football Insider understands.

The 28-year-old is out of contract this summer but is in talks with the Black Cats over new terms.

However, a recruitment source has told Football Insider League One rivals Ipswich are willing to offer the striker a big-money deal.

The Tractor Boys are expected to spend big this summer and want a top-class goalscorer to spearhead their promotion bid next season.

It is understood they are keen to take advantage of Wyke’s contract situation at the Stadium of Light.

The Sunderland hitman scored 25 goals in 43 appearances during the regular League One season.

He then netted in the 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the second leg of their play-off semi-final.

However, the Imps progressed 3-2 on aggregate to leave the Black Cats facing another season in the third tier.

Wyke joined Sunderland from Bradford back in 2018 and has struck 41 times in 113 appearances.

With his future currently up in the air, Ipswich are hoping to convince the striker to leave Wearside for Suffolk.

The Tractor Boys view the Middlesbrough-born hitman as the proven League One hitman needed to fire them up the table.

Wyke has scored 58 goals and contributed 22 assists in 175 third-tier appearances during spells with Hartlepool, Bradford and Sunderland.

Ipswich finished ninth this season but were the third-lowest scorers in the league, scoring 46 goals in as many games.

James Norwood was the club’s top scorer with nine goals.

In other news, Paul Robinson has claimed Celtic could join race to sign top Sunderland star.
