Sources: Jagielka undergoing Stoke City medical after quitting Derby County

Phil Jagielka is undergoing a medical at Stoke City after quitting Derby County, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Stoke have moved quickly to agree a deal for the former Everton and Sheffield United defender after Derby were unable to offer him a contract extension due to EFL regulations.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Stoke have struck a deal with Jagielka after monitoring his situation for several weeks.

He is set to sign a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Jagielka moved to Derby at the beginning of the season after being released by Sheffield United.

The former England international played 21 times across all competitions for the Championship’s bottom club.

The 39-year-old will swap the relegation battle for a play-off race with Stoke City sitting in eighth, five points off the top-six.

Stoke have been without standout centre-back Harry Souttar since the beginning of November after he suffered an ACL injury.

The Potters’ form has suffered as a result and they have only won twice in their last seven league games.

The vastly-experienced Jagielka will offer cover until the end of the season.

He has played 376 times in the Premier League across his time with Sheffield United and Everton.

Stoke are next in action on Sunday (16 January) when they travel to Hull City.

Derby, who are currently 11 points from safety, host Sheffield United tomorrow (15 January).

In other news, Derby County are racing three other clubs to sign a player and a six-figure bid will seal the deal.
