Sources: Josh McPake set for Greenock Morton trial after Rangers contract terminated

Greenock Morton are ready to take former Rangers forward Josh McPake on trial, sources have told Football Insider.

The forward is a free agent and has been without a club since being released by the Glasgow giants on 1 September.

Greenock Morton have been struggling in the Scottish Championship and are considering a wild card move to turn around their fortunes.

The fans and board are divided over offering a deal to McPake given his disciplinary record and previous loan spell at the club, where he was in and out of the team managed by David Hopkin.

He made 10 appearances in his previous spell at Cappielow in the 2020-21 campaign, notching two assists.

McPake played twice this term prior to his Rangers exit, making two substitute appearances in the Scottish League Challenge Cup and notching the winner against Stenhousemuir.

The winger previously trained at Hamilton Academical this season but they were unable to afford a deal to sign him to a contract.

McPake‘s sole first-team appearance for Rangers came under Steven Gerrard in the 2019-20 season, when he came off the bench in a 6-0 European qualifier win over St Joseph’s FC.

His time at Ibrox was littered with disciplinary issues, with Football Insider revealing as early as March that Rangers were considering terminating his deal after fining him for off-pitch issues.

The 22-year-old has made 96 total senior appearances during his career so far, scoring nine goals.

Rangers

His most successful loan spell came at Queen’s Park, where he notched four goals and three assists across 33 appearances in all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign.

Greenock Morton sit bottom of the Scottish Championship with just eight points after 12 games.

In other news, big news on Ianis Hagi returning to Rangers.
