Sources: Josh Murphy undergoing Oxford United medical today after Cardiff City exit

Josh Murphy is undergoing a medical at Oxford United on Tuesday after agreeing terms, sources have told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old is a free agent after leaving Cardiff City earlier this summer when his contract expired.

Murphy has been training with Oxford and manager Karl Robinson is keen to be reunited with him having previously worked with him at MK Dons.

The winger scored seven goals and grabbed 10 assists under Robinson in the 2015-16 campaign.

Murphy spent last season on loan at Preston North End – but managed just 14 appearances across all competitions for the Lancashire side as his campaign was blighted by injury.

He failed to start a game for the Lancashire club.

Murphy returned to Cardiff before the Championship season even concluded – with a report from Lancs Live (26 April) suggesting the star’s “punctuality” and “attitude” was a driving force behind the decision.

He joined the Bluebirds in 2018 for a reported £11million but could not prevent the Welsh club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Murphy made 99 appearances for Cardiff in total, scoring 14 goals.

Football Insider revealed last month (29 June) that the winger was the subject of interest from Huddersfield – but a deal failed to materialise.

Oxford are now set to swoop in and bring the former Norwich star to the Kassam Stadium.

Robinson will be hoping Murphy’s talent can propel his side into the race for promotion after narrowly missing out on a play-off berth last term.

Oxford start their League One campaign away at relegated Derby County on Saturday (30 July).
