Leeds United are braced to lose out to the Premier League big hitters in the race to sign Daniel James this summer, Football Insider can reveal.
Marcelo Bielsa went into detail at his media conference on Friday how United pulled out all the stops to land the Swansea City winger on a loan-to-buy deal in the January window.
Leeds agreed terms with James and he underwent a medical before the Welsh club pulled the plug just when he was about to put pen to paper.
The Championship promotion hopefuls are still chasing James but they face strong competition for his signature from the likes of Southampton, Leicester City and Bournemouth.
A Leeds source told Football Insider that, as things stand, the club are likely to miss out on signing the 21-year-old even though he is almost certain to leave Swansea.
The United hierarchy are braced for the devastating possibility of losing out on their long-term target regardless of whether they secure promotion to the Premier League.
The former Hull City youngster has broken into the Wales squad this season following his impressive displays for Swansea, which have included some outstanding displays against Premier League opposition.
Talks over a new contract with the Swans have failed to get off the ground and his current deal expires in the summer of 2020.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that club chiefs are fuming behind the scenes after being trumped to “unbelievable” signing.
