Sources: Leeds United leapfrog Everton in race to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Leeds United now lead Everton in the race to sign Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 24-year-old has been in superb form in the Championship and the Yorkshire club have registered their interest in bringing him to Elland Road at the end of the season.

Fulham are also interested in Gyokeres and are ready to compete with Leeds for his signature, but Everton are falling behind in the race.

The Merseyside club are huge admirers of Gyokeres and would love to submit a bid for him this summer, but the Toffees are currently panicking over their financial struggles that could put a strict limit on their spending.

Gyokeres’ contract is set to expire in 2024 and Coventry are working hard to extend his deal, but it is understood that a move away from the Championship side is the more likely outcome this summer.

The Coventry forward only trails Middlesbrough’s Chuba Akpom in the Championship scoring charts, with the Sweden international scoring 18 and assisting eight in 39 appearances this season.

Gyokeres’ most recent goal against Wigan last month saw him surpass his scoring record last season at Coventry, marking this season as his most productive campaign with the Sky Blues since permanently joining them in 2021.

Prior to his Coventry move, Gyokeres spent three years at Brighton trying to force his way into the first team via loan spells at FC St Pauli and Swansea City.

The Seagulls then sent Gyokeres on loan to Coventry for the second half of the 2020/21 campaign and he signed permanently that summer after impressing manager Mark Robins.
