Sources: Leeds United plot move to sign Haji Wright

Leeds remain on the hunt for a new striker given their woes in front of goal this season in the Premier League.

In a bid to improve their survival in the English top-flight, the Peacocks were eager to bring in quality forwards in the summer.

Sources told Football Insider over the summer that Leeds wanted to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta, yet Crystal Palace were unwilling to part with their pivotal frontman.

Similarly, Leeds were interested in Aleksandar Mitrovic, but a deal never materialised as they were left with below-par options up top for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Wright not a ‘priority’ for Leeds with greater emphasis on other attacking positions

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the Whites will likely monitor the USA international but not make an official bid in January.

Last season, Haji Wright produced a career-best campaign, netting 18 times in 49 appearances which has deservedly caught the attention of Premier League sides.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s on their list.

“He’s had a very good season for Coventry, scored goals last season as well for the Sky Blues, nine goals in 13 games this season [as of 30 October]. So, I’m sure there’s other clubs taking note of that.

“I don’t think it’d be a priority for Leeds in all honesty. I think they’re looking for a more wide attacking player, maybe a creative attacking midfielder as well.

“So not necessarily a striker like Haji Wright and I don’t think Coventry will be entertaining any offers for Haji Wright in the new year.”

Leeds prioritising midfield signing with Issou Sissokho on their radar

As mentioned, the Whites are likely to be in the market in January for a midfielder rather than a striker and Daniel Farke has his eyes on a potential signing.

Sources told Football Insider that Leeds are monitoring Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Issouf Sissokho.

The 23-year-old joined the Israeli outfit back in August 2024 and has become one of their main players as they compete once again in the Europa League.

However, with Mali competing at AFCON, if Sissokho gets his first call-up, the Peacocks may want to hold off to see if he comes back from the tournament unscathed.
