Sources: Leicester City plot raid to sign USA star to replace Harvey Barnes

Leicester City are among a number of Championship clubs eyeing a move for USA international Jonathan Lewis, sources have told Football Insider.

Colorado Rapids winger Lewis has been tracked by Burnley for much of the MLS season ahead of their Premier League return.

Now Leicester have joined the hunt to sign the super-quick attacker.

The Foxes have identified Lewis as a ready-made replacement for the sought-after Harvey Barnes, who is expected to leave the King Power following their relegation from the Premier League.

USA international Lewis could be available for around £500,000 due to having less than 18 months to run on his current contract.

The 26-year-old, who is regarded as one of the fastest players in the MLS, has scored four goals and laid on one assist in 19 appearances this season.

The winger joined Colorado from New York City FC in 2019 and signed a contract extension in December 2020 keeping him at the club until the end of 2024.

Lewis has made 118 appearances for the MLS side since his arrival, netting 26 goals and nine assists in those outings and has also been capped eight times for the senior USA national team.

Barnes, who Leicester are hopeful Lewis could replace, has made 187 appearances for the Foxes since he arrived in 2018 and has netted 45 goals in those outings.

This season the 25-year-old scored 13 goals in 40 appearances and was a bright spark in a dull Leicester side that ultimately couldn’t survive in the English top flight.
