Sources: Liverpool explore market for surprise forward signing

Liverpool are exploring the market for a short-term forward signing in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The general expectation has been that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will not add to his squad with any senior captures this month.

But Liverpool are nonetheless assessing the market with a shock deal for another senior attacker in mind – despite already having five established options.

The Merseysiders want someone with the capability to slot straight into the team, providing cover and competition for star quintet Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

Any potential incoming is most likely to be a loan deal.

Salah could be missing for as long as five weeks at the African Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast should Egypt recreate their run to the final in the 2022 tournament.

His absence could be vital with Liverpool on the hunt for a first Premier League title since the 2019-20 campaign.

The 31-year-old winger is the Reds’ top scorer with 18 goals in 27 games across all competitions this term.

Jota (nine), Nunez (eight) and Gakpo (eight) have also chipped in with crucial goals as Liverpool also compete in the Europa League this term, and prepare for a League Cup semi-final against Fulham next week.

Klopp’s side bolstered their creative options in the summer window with the signing of Dominik Szoboszlai, but he has been used almost exclusively in a deeper midfield role with great success.

Liverpool

Liverpool sit top of the Premier League after 20 top-flight games in the 2023-24 campaign and are three points clear of second-place Aston Villa.

The Reds are next in action against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday (7 January) before facing Fulham in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final (10 January).
