Sources: Liverpool product Owen Mooney signs for Wigan Athletic
Owen Mooney has signed his first professional deal at Wigan Athletic, Football Insider understands.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper is highly rated by the Championship new boys and has developed well since signing from Liverpool in 2017.
A Wigan source has told Football Insider that Mooney has agreed professional terms with the club and has already put pen to paper.
Wigan have high hopes for the shot-stopper and see him as having a bright future at the DW Stadium.
Mooney had a spell out on loan at Northern Premier League Division One side Newcastle Town during the first half of this season.
The promising keeper is yet to make his first-team debut for the Latics.
However, he was on the bench for their EFL Trophy game against Crewe Alexandra back in October 2021.
He joined the north west outfit as an under-14 talent from Liverpool and has featured regularly for the youth teams.
Mooney made 22 appearances for Wigan’s under-18s side during the 2020/21 campaign.
He helped the Latics win both the Professional Development League North title and the national title.
The shot-stopper has also played for the club’s under-23s, including in the delayed 2019/20 U23s LFA Senior Cup Final.
He joined Newcastle Town on loan in August and played 25 times for the Staffordshire outfit, with five clean sheets under his belt.
Mooney was an ever-present for his loan side until he picked up an injury in January.
His temporary spell came to an end in February, just days before his 18th birthday.
