Sources: Longstaff agrees Newcastle contract extension

Matty Longstaff has agreed a Newcastle United contract extension ahead of his loan to Aberdeen, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The midfielder has agreed to join the Scottish Premiership on a season-long deal after United accepted their loan bid.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that the club have also agreed to extend Longstaff’s contract by 12 months.

That will tie him to St James’ Park until the summer of 2023.

He signed a two-year contract with the Magpies last summer.

Newcastle have moved to extend his terms by a further year before letting him head out on loan.

He is now set to undergo a medical with Aberdeen before joining the Premiership club temporarily.

The Scottish outfit will pay a loan fee for the 21-year-old and a deal is expected to be completed by the end of the weekend.

Longstaff is set to head north of the border after struggling for game time at St James’ Park.

He made just five Premier League appearances for Newcastle last season.

The homegrown talent has not been in the matchday squad for either of Newcastle’s two top-flight games this term.

He was left as an unused substitute against Burnley in the League Cup.

Longstaff scored the winner against Manchester United on his senior debut back in 2019.

The younger brother of Newcastle midfielder Sean, he has played 20 times for his boyhood club to date.
