Sources: Major Rangers sporting director update after Beale directive

Rangers boss Michael Beale has told Ibrox chiefs he doesn’t want the club to appoint a sporting director to replace Ross Wilson, sources have told Football Insider.

The 39-year-old Scot quit last month to join Nottingham Forest after overseeing a recruitment record that has been criticised heavily by Gers supporters in recent years.

Beale, who succeeded Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November 2022, has made it clear he wants to use his own recruitment team to bring in players.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Rangers boss believes a sporting director is not necessary and would be counter-productive.

It is also believed that Beale did not rate Wilson highly – and the former QPR manager fears a repeat of mixed transfer success at Ibrox if the wrong man is appointed.

The sporting director is just one of several high-profile figures to leave Rangers recently.

Chairman Douglas Park, CEO Stewart Robertson, academy chief Craig Mulholland and director Andrew Dickson have all departed the club – who will be without silverware this season.

Meanwhile, Beale has gone public about Rangers facing the “biggest rebuild in years” in the summer transfer window.

He appeared to confirm in a press conference on Friday (5 May) that Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent will depart the club when their contracts end later this month.

The likes of Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack, Filip Helander and Allan McGregor are also out of contract this summer.

Beale will now look to bring his own targets in as he attempts to close the gap to Celtic – who could win a domestic treble this season.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (6 May) that Rangers are plotting a shock move for Coventry hotshot Victor Gyokeres.

This site has also revealed (3 May) that Kieran Dowell has undergone a medical at Ibrox as his free transfer from Norwich City inches closer.
