Sources: Major update on Lascelles potentially quitting Newcastle United

Newcastle United club captain Jamaal Lascelles will have a decision to make on his future this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the 29-year-old will have to leave St James’ Park this summer to get first-team football.

It is believed opportunities will be hard to come by for Lascelles in the 2023-24 campaign despite the addition of Champions League fixtures to Newcastle’s schedule.

Nonetheless, the defender remains an important figure on Tyneside and is a big influence in the dressing room.

Lascelles made just 11 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign following the arrival of Sven Botman and Dan Burn in 2022.

He was named in the starting lineup on five occasions and managed a total of 463 minutes of action.

That involvement could be reduced even further with Newcastle plotting a move for a new centre-back this summer.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (3 July) that the Magpies are exploring a potential summer move for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio.

Manager Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his side with Champions League football on the horizon in the upcoming season.

Lascelles has racked up 225 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club in 2014, netting 14 goals.

The Derby-born ace has just 12 months left to run on his reported £40,000-a-week contract.

Newcastle

Football Insider revealed in February that Nottingham Forest are plotting a move to bring the experienced defender back to the City Ground.

Newcastle have already allowed Ciaran Clark, Chris Wood and Matty Longstaff to leave the club so far this summer.
