Sources: Major update on Man United and Kalvin Phillips

Kalvin Phillips is highly unlikely to leave Man City for rivals Man United despite reported interest from Erik ten Hag’s side, sources have told Football Insider.

United have been recently linked with a move for Phillips, 28, who has fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium under Pep Guardiola.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (11 December) that the England international is ready to move on from Man City in January as his lack of action continues – with West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle among the potential suitors.

Man United

But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that a move from City to United would be a “big surprise”.

It is believed a move to Old Trafford is highly unlikely – but Phillips is likely to leave the Etihad Stadium on loan in January with a view to a permanent move in the summer.

He has made eight appearances across all competitions totalling 215 minutes.

Speaking recently, City boss Guardiola insisted he is “so sorry” for Phillips’ continued exclusion but maintained he “cannot see” the midfielder breaking into his side.

Despite winning the treble last season, he has struggled for game time at City since completing a reported £45million move from Leeds United in 2022.

Phillips remains a regular fixture in the England side and is keen to move away from Man City to maintain his Three Lions place ahead of next year’s European Championships in Germany.

Man City

It is believed Man United will be in the market for midfield reinforcements in the new year.

Football Insider revealed on 3 December that United are set to explore a move for a defensive midfielder in January – casting further doubt on the future of on-loan ace Sofyan Amrabat.
