Sources: Significant update on Newcastle bid to sign Trippier after £22m twist

Newcastle United have hit a stumbling block in their bid to lure Kieran Trippier in January, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The newly-rich Premier League club have been working on a deal to make the Atletico Madrid right-back a marquee signing and this site revealed on 15 December that talks were underway.

But a Newcastle source has told Football Insider that talks have stalled due to Trippier’s wage demands.

The England international is seeking a long-term deal worth around £120,000-a-week.

That would mean making Trippier, who turned 31 in September, their highest paid player.

A three-and-a-half year agreement, running until 2025, would cost £22million on top of the transfer fee.

Newcastle have yet to green light those terms despite their recent status as one of the richest clubs in the world.

It means the transfer is up in the air going into January even though Trippier himself is keen to quit the Spanish champions for a relegation battle.

He wants to return to the Premier League and is not fazed by a relegation fight.

Trippier is out of contract at Atletico at the end of the season but is close to automatically renewing by a further 12 months until 2023.

An extension is triggered if he starts 20 matches – he has made 13 starts among 16 appearances this term and made his return to action in a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid last weekend.

Trippier joined Diego Simeone’s side in the summer of 2019 from Tottenham and has been a mainstay of the team over the last three seasons.

He is proven in the Premier League, where he has made 107 appearances in total, after spells at Spurs and Burnley.
