Sources: Man City open talks over Julian Alvarez deal
Man City have opened talks with striker Julian Alvarez over a lucrative new contract at the club, sources have told Football Insider.
The Premier League champions want to reward the 23-year-old for his progress since arriving at the club last summer (2022).
Alvarez still has more than four years left to run on his current deal at the Etihad Stadium but is set to pledge his long-term future regardless.
It is believed that the Argentina international will be brought more in line with the club’s highest earners with this new contract.
According to FBref, Alvarez earns £50,000-a-week on his current deal.
The 23-year-old scored four goals for Argentina as they lifted the World Cup in Qatar – including a brace in the semi-final against Croatia.
Despite his international success, Alvarez remains behind Premier League top scorer Erling Haaland in the Man City pecking order.
He has started just six of a possible 25 league games this season, scoring five goals – including a first-half strike in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday (25 February).
He has notched a further five strikes in cup and European competition.
Alvarez scored 18 goals in 26 outings as a regular starter for River Plate in the 2021-22 season to earn his Premier League move.
Man City paid a reported fee of £14.1million to bring the striker to the club in January 2022.

Pep Guardiola’s side trail league leaders Arsenal by two points – and have played one more game than the Gunners.
City are set for a crucial Champions League Round of 16 second leg match against RB Leipzig on 14 March.
