Sources: Man United plan new role for Cristiano Ronaldo as he packs bags for arrival

Man United are planning to use Cristiano Ronaldo in the number nine role when he joins, Football Insider has learned.

The Premier League giants are in advanced talks to re-sign the Portuguese, 36, in what would be a sensational deal.

A United source has told Football Insider that the club have offered Ronaldo a two-year contract and he is close to agreeing personal terms.

The club do not want negotiations to drag on close to next Tuesday’s cut-off, and he is packing his bags with a view to the deal being tied up by the end of the weekend.

United are planning for Ronaldo to arrive in England by Monday in order to sign on a permanent transfer.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has held talks with the all-time great and the plan is to use him as the main centre-forward.

Ronaldo has spent most of his illustrious career as a wide forward, but has played centrally more often in recent seasons.

During his first United spell, he was used almost exclusively out wide, initially on the right flank and then on the left that became his favoured position.

He scored a staggering 118 goals in 292 games across all competitions in his first spell at Old Trafford.

The Portugal captain became even more prolific as a centre-forward during the end of his time at Real Madrid and Juventus.

The forward, who will turn 37 in February, will end his spell at Juve with 101 goals in just 134 appearances across all competitions.

Man United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer has used Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial as lone strikers in the opening two Premier League games.

He also has Edinson Cavani in his ranks who has not featured yet this season because of a knee injury.

In other news, “Greedy” Man United could sign another midfielder after a major update.
