Sources: Man United plan to sell two first-team stars in January

Man United will need to sell players before making potential signings in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (2 October) that Erik ten Hag is eyeing moves for a winger and central midfielder in the mid-season window.

However, it is believed outgoings will need to come before any moves are made in January.

As in the summer window, midfielder Scott McTominay and ex-captain Harry Maguire are the prime candidates to be sold on.

Both players have been involved sparingly under Ten Hag this season after his attempts to sell the pair in the off-season.

Maguire has made just three appearances across all competitions this season totalling 116 minutes of action.

The England international, who is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2025, was stripped of the captaincy earlier this year.

He was widely linked with a big-money move to West Ham in the summer but a deal failed to materialise before the 1 September deadline.

McTominay was also linked with a London Stadium switch but eventually remained at Old Trafford past the cut-off.

He has made five appearances across all competitions for Man United this season, totalling 203 minutes of action.

The Scotland international is under contract at the Red Devils until June 2025.

Summer signing Sofyan Amrabat has recently returned to action after an injury and is likely to limit McTominay’s involvement even further in the coming months.

Man United

Man United have endured a stuttering start to their 2023-24 campaign, losing four of their seven Premier League games.

They are next in top-flight action against Brentford on Saturday (7 October).
