Sources: Man United set to pull out of race to sign Kim

Man United are set to pull out of the race to sign Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils held a very strong interest in the 26-year-old but are preparing to admit defeat in their pursuit of his signature.

It is believed Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich continue to lead the way in the race for Kim.

The former Fenerbahce ace has a release clause in his Napoli contract, which runs until 2025 and earns him a reported wage of just over £53,000-a-week.

It is believed that the clause becomes active next month – which coincides with the defender’s return from military service in his homeland.

Man United made Kim their top summer target at centre-back and launched enquiries over his availability – but Bayern Munich stole in and are now the favourites to secure his signature.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a stellar 2022-23 campaign as Napoli lifted their first Serie A title since 1990.

Kim notched two goals and two assists in 45 appearances in all competitions for the Italian outfit – who also reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

He joined Napoli from Fenerbahce for a reported fee of £15.4million last summer (2022) but only signed a three-year deal with the club.

Man United are keen to add a centre-back this summer as one of a number of priority areas for Erik ten Hag.

Central midfield is believed to be one of those areas, amid continuing negotiations over a deal for Mason Mount.

The Red Devils are also in the market for a new striker in the summer window.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (1 June) that Ten Hag’s side could turn attention to signing Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund amid concerns over a potential Harry Kane move this summer.
