Sources: Man United to appoint Fletcher and another inexperienced boss - they could stay all season

Man United are ready to put Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick in interim charge when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit is confirmed, Football Insider has learned.

The Glazer-led hierarchy decided to sack Solskjaer at an emergency meeting on Saturday night.

A United source has told Football Insider that the club spent last night finalising a compensation package and an announcement over his departure is imminent.

The Premier League giants have decided to place technical director Fletcher, 37, and first-team coach Carrick, 40, in temporary charge.

There is even the possibility they could stay for the rest of the season if things go well and a deal cannot be agreed with a high-profile manager in mid-season.

The Glazers backed Solskjaer following humiliating defeats to Liverpool and Man City before the international break.

But Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing at Watford proved the final straw and the directors have decided his reign is over.

Fletcher and Carrick are set to take charge of Tuesday’s Champions League game at Villarreal.

United will work to source a permanent appointment from a shortlist including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers.

Fletcher was promoted from first-team coach to technical director at Old Trafford in March 2021.

He initially returned to Man United in October 2020 to work as an academy coach.

Being placed in interim charge of the first team represents another step in Fletcher’s rapid rise through the ranks at the club.

Man United now lie 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea following Saturday’s shock result.

Incidentally, the Red Devils’ next Premier League game is against the Blues at Stamford Bridge.
